Colin Townsend

Colin completed his DPhil at Sussex University before taking up teaching appointments at Oxford and the University of East Anglia before moving to Otago University in 1989. He is Professor in Zoology, Fellow of the Cawthron Institute and Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Colin has published more than 200 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters exploring how flow-related disturbance, invasive species and multiple agriculture stressors affect stream ecosystems. He has also co-authored or sole-authored three successful ecology text books, adopted by universities around the world and translated into nine languages. For more than 30 years he has been co-editor in chief of the international journal Freshwater Biology. In 2007 he received an Exceptional Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Ecological Society and in 2013 the Award of Excellence from the Society for Freshwater Sciences.
